Researchers from IIT Madras and IISc Bengaluru have synthesized a carbon free molecule that mimics the sandwich structure of ferrocene. By replacing carbon rings with boron based rings and using an osmium atom, the team has achieved a structural feat that has eluded chemists for seven decades. This new molecule, detailed in the journal Science, may offer greater stability than traditional ferrocene. The discovery could lead to the development of new materials for use in electronics and medicine, potentially reducing reliance on carbon based organic synthesis in specific industrial applications.
