IIT Kanpur Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence ECOGEN: What It Means for India's Clean Energy Goals
gktoday.inIIT Kanpur announced a new Centre of Excellence on Green Hydrogen called ECOGEN, approved under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024. The centre will focus on the entire green hydrogen value chain: generation via electrolysis using renewable electricity, storage, transportation, safety standards, testing, and industrial applications. Professor Prabodh Bajpai will lead the initiative, which aims to cut production costs and support Uttar Pradesh's net-zero target. This is part of a broader push by the state, which also approved a joint green hydrogen CoE with IIT Kanpur and Harcourt Butler Technical University in December 2025. For carbon markets and grid decarbonization watchers, the key question is whether these research centres can move from lab-scale demonstrations to commercial-scale deployment. Green hydrogen's cost remains the main barrier, and India needs to see real pilot projects and industrial offtake to make this more than an academic exercise.
