IIT Kanpur researchers tested E20 petrol (20% ethanol blend) on BS6 car engines and motorcycles to measure real-world performance and engine wear. The study found that ethanol-blended fuel produced lower carbon deposits than conventional petrol, and no adverse effects on engine components were observed during live testing. Researchers monitored knocking, mileage, and engine response under varied speed, load, and acceleration conditions. Carbon deposits were found even in parts never exposed to E20, indicating conventional petrol also contributes to buildup. The findings support India's push for higher ethanol blending as a way to reduce transport emissions without harming existing vehicles. For fleet operators and policymakers, this data strengthens the case for accelerating E20 adoption. The tests provide concrete evidence that ethanol blending can lower carbon formation while maintaining engine performance, which is critical for meeting India's 20% ethanol blending target and reducing lifecycle emissions from the transport sector.
