IIT Guwahati has partnered with Kaashyap Cleantech Innovations to commercialize a biological process that converts methane and carbon dioxide into bio-methanol. Unlike traditional chemical methods, this catalyst-free approach uses chemoautotrophic bacteria to operate under mild conditions, reducing the energy required for production. The resulting bio-methanol can be used as a diesel blend or an industrial solvent. Testing shows that these blends can reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions by up to 87 percent compared to standard diesel, offering a scalable path for carbon sequestration and green fuel production.
