IIT Guwahati has partnered with Kaashyap Cleantech Innovations to commercialize a biological process that converts methane and carbon dioxide into bio-methanol. This two-stage system uses chemoautotrophic bacteria to create a clean liquid fuel and industrial solvent without the need for toxic chemical catalysts. Tests on diesel-blended bio-methanol showed an 87 percent reduction in emissions, including carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The project aims to support net-zero goals by combining fuel production with active carbon capture, making it a candidate for carbon credit markets.
