IIT Gandhinagar Study: Disordered Carbon Could Cut Green Hydrogen Costs by Replacing Platinum Catalysts
theblunttimes.inResearchers at IIT Gandhinagar used computer models to test a disordered form of carbon called monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) as a catalyst for green hydrogen production. Unlike graphene, MAC has irregular rings and ripples, and about 15% of the 1,183 sites tested showed hydrogen adsorption values that could be useful for catalysis. The study, published in npj 2D Materials and Applications, suggests metal-free catalysts could one day replace costly platinum and iridium in electrolyzers. Machine learning helped screen the candidate sites before lab work, which could speed up catalyst discovery. The authors stress that experimental testing is still needed, so this is not a commercial breakthrough yet. But if the results hold in real electrodes, it could lower electrolyzer costs and make green hydrogen more competitive.
