IIT Gandhinagar computational study: Monolayer amorphous carbon may lower green hydrogen catalyst costs
bioenergytimes.comResearchers at IIT Gandhinagar used computational methods to study monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) as a potential metal-free catalyst for green hydrogen production. The study, published in npj 2D Materials and Applications, found that about 15% of analyzed sites on MAC showed favorable hydrogen adsorption free energies below 0.25 eV, outperforming pristine graphene. This could reduce reliance on expensive metals like platinum and iridium in electrolyzers. The team used density functional theory and machine learning to screen 1,183 sites, identifying structural disorder as a key factor for catalytic activity. While promising, the findings are computational and need experimental validation. If confirmed, MAC could lower catalyst costs, supporting India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and broader decarbonization efforts.
