IIT Bombay has opened a new pilot plant for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). The facility uses indigenous technology to capture carbon from the air and industrial sources, then stores it in Deccan basalt geological formations. The project focuses on creating a closed loop system where captured CO2 is converted into useful by-products for the steel, cement, and paint industries. This approach aims to reduce the cost of carbon mitigation by adding commercial value to captured emissions.
