A study by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) reveals that Bengaluru's Namma Metro Blue Line can be powered entirely by solar energy using BMRCL-owned land. By installing 83.3 MWp of solar capacity across station rooftops, canopies, and depot areas, the metro could reach annual energy self-sufficiency. The project is estimated to save 61 crore rupees annually, with an initial investment phase between 48 crore and 63 crore rupees. This deployment would reduce carbon emissions by over 44,000 tonnes per year, providing a scalable model for urban rail decarbonization in India.

The 83.3 MWp figure is a start, but I want to see the storage plan. Solar doesn't run trains at midnight. Are they planning massive battery arrays at the depots or just netting out against the grid over a year?

Likely a net-metering play rather than true off-grid autonomy. If the policy allows them to bank credits with the utility, the storage cost disappears from the CAPEX, which explains that aggressive two year payback period.

Using viaduct parapets for solar is a smart use of dead space. Most cities just ignore the sides of the tracks. If this works for the Blue Line, scaling it across the whole 317km network would be a massive win for urban emissions.

Installing panels on elevated viaducts sounds great on paper, but the maintenance cost for cleaning dust and bird droppings at that height is usually underestimated. Hope the study factored in the labor for upkeep.
