A new IEA Global Methane Tracker report reveals that fossil fuel production emitted 124 million tonnes of methane in 2025. The data suggests that fixing leaks and ending non-emergency flaring could return 200 billion cubic metres of gas to the market annually. While 159 countries have signed the Global Methane Pledge, a significant implementation gap remains. The report notes that 70% of these emissions could be eliminated using existing technology, with a large portion of these fixes costing nothing in net terms due to the value of the recovered gas.
