The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) released a report arguing that onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) could play a meaningful role in cutting emissions from the maritime sector. The technology would capture CO2 from ship exhaust and store it onboard for later offloading, rather than relying solely on switching to alternative fuels. ICS sees OCCS as a bridge solution while zero-carbon fuel infrastructure scales up. Shipping accounts for roughly 3% of global emissions and faces tightening regulations from the IMO and EU. OCCS could retrofit existing vessels, avoiding the need to scrap or replace large fleets. However, questions remain about storage logistics, energy penalties from running capture equipment, and whether ports will invest in offloading and sequestration facilities. The ICS report does not estimate costs or timelines in detail.
