The International Chamber of Shipping has published a new report on onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS), commissioned from Lloyd's Register Advisory. The report provides strategic guidance for shipowners as the industry faces tightening greenhouse gas regulations without scalable alternative fuels available yet. It covers technology readiness, fuel consumption, costs, safety, and environmental performance of OCCS options. OCCS is identified as one of the few near-term options that can deliver material tank-to-wake emissions reductions on vessels using conventional or transition fuels through the 2030s. Interesting that ICS is pushing OCCS as a near term fix while green fuels aren't ready. The report says it can cut tank to wake emissions but I wonder what the actual capture rates look like and how much extra fuel burn that requires.

Yeah the fuel penalty is the big question. If you burn more fuel to capture CO2 you might end up with net higher emissions on a well to wake basis depending on the fuel source. Would be good to see the full lifecycle numbers.

This feels like a bridge technology that could buy time but the cost per ton of CO2 captured on a ship is probably way higher than onshore CCS. Interested to see if any shipowners actually install this or if it stays a study.

The regulatory piece is key. If IMO or EU ETS pricing makes OCCS cheaper than paying for emissions allowances then it could get real traction. Otherwise it's just a nice report. Need to see the cost comparison vs carbon pricing.

Retrofitting existing ships with OCCS is a totally different ballgame from designing it into newbuilds. Space constraints, weight, power draw for the capture unit. The report says it covers both but the retrofit challenges are huge.
