The International Carbon Registry has conditionally approved M-ICR010, a coal abatement methodology that would credit emissions reductions from permanently avoiding extraction of commercially viable thermal coal. The approval only covers a pilot, and no credits can be issued until a first project has been validated, registered, monitored, and verified. Developer TransEnergy Global has six months to bring its first project into validation. The registry will reassess the methodology after that project is verified or within 24 months, whichever comes first. Board concerns include additionality, market leakage, and permanence, especially reliance on the asset owner's own assessment of commercial viability.
