Ice Memory project stores disappearing glacier cores in Antarctica to preserve climate history

Scientists are storing ice cores from glaciers around the world in a natural ice cave in Antarctica. The Ice Memory project near Concordia Station preserves ancient air bubbles trapped in ice, which contain records of carbon dioxide and methane levels from hundreds to thousands of years ago. These cores are taken from rapidly melting glaciers in the Alps, Andes, and Himalayas before the climate data is lost forever. The storage site uses the natural cold of Antarctica, with temperatures around minus 52 degrees Celsius, to keep the cores stable without mechanical cooling. Researchers say future scientists will be able to analyze the cores with more advanced technology, extracting climate information that cannot be obtained today. The project is a race against time as glaciers shrink at an accelerating rate worldwide.
