ICE Launches GreenTrace Environmental Registry for Carbon Credits and Emission Allowances
businesswire.comIntercontinental Exchange (ICE) has launched ICE GreenTrace, a new environmental registry technology service that brings financial market infrastructure to carbon credit registries. The platform supports the lifecycle of environmental instruments including carbon credits, emission allowances, and energy attribute certificates. Winrock International's Environmental Resources Trust has migrated its registry operations onto ICE GreenTrace as the launch partner. This includes the ACR and ART carbon crediting programs, with approximately 437 million serialized credits and over 40,000 documents transferred from 1,162 projects. The migration gives carbon market participants access to the same technology stack used for globally systemic financial infrastructure. ICE's environmental markets already underpin price discovery across five cap-and-trade programs globally. In 2025, a record 20.9 million environmental contracts traded on ICE, representing over $1 trillion in notional value. This move positions carbon credits to become an institutional asset class by applying the same digital infrastructure that transformed other analogue markets.
