ICCT Report: Road Transport Pollution Caused 90,000 Premature Deaths in India in 2024
newindianexpress.comA new report from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) estimates that road transport pollution led to 90,000 premature deaths and 15,300 new paediatric asthma cases in India in 2024. Heavy-duty vehicles, though less than 4% of the fleet, contributed 79% of nitrogen oxide and 64% of PM2.5 emissions. The Delhi-NCR region bore a disproportionate share, accounting for 23% of asthma cases despite having only 5% of the population. The report projects that achieving zero-emission transport could prevent 1.7 million premature deaths and 97,200 asthma cases in India by 2050. In response, the Indian government launched PARIVARTAN, a 9,585 crore rupee program to replace old trucks and buses in Delhi-NCR with cleaner BS-VI and electric vehicles. The findings underscore the urgent need for freight electrification and stronger emissions policies to reduce the health burden from transport pollution.
