The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has criticized the European Union's proposal to extend its Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) beyond European borders. IATA warns that applying regional carbon rules to international aviation could create jurisdictional disputes, undermine global climate efforts, and increase costs for airlines and passengers. Instead, the group urges the EU to support CORSIA, the global carbon offsetting scheme for aviation developed through ICAO. IATA also calls for stronger incentives for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), including a book-and-claim system to boost adoption. The association says it will continue engaging with EU policymakers to promote climate policies that avoid extraterritorial measures and support internationally coordinated decarbonization.
