IATA has launched the Supporting Alliance for CORSIA EEU Supply, a coalition of over 30 airlines and stakeholders aiming to make 225 to 250 million eligible emissions units available by spring 2027. The group will help countries navigate the interface between their Paris Agreement obligations and CORSIA requirements, focusing on avoiding double counting and improving access to carbon markets. The alliance offers pro bono implementation support to countries that want to authorize domestic emissions units under CORSIA, ahead of the first compliance deadline in December 2027. IATA estimates the program could generate $4 to $5 billion in climate finance during its first phase and up to $100 billion by 2035, depending on market prices. CORSIA is the only global market based mechanism for international aviation emissions, agreed through ICAO in 2016. Offsetting requirements began in 2021 and will apply to all international flights from 2027, with exemptions for least developed countries and small island states.

I wonder what types of credits they expect to use. Not all EEUs are created equal. If most come from REDD+ or renewables, additionality and permanence will be debated.
