The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has started a new Coordinated Research Project to develop next-generation nuclear fuels. The initiative focuses on improving fuel performance and safety to support the deployment of advanced reactor technologies and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

Better fuel efficiency is great, but the real bottleneck for SMRs is still the licensing and interconnection timeline. Does this research actually speed up the regulatory approval process or just the physics side of things?
Usually, these IAEA projects provide the technical basis that regulators eventually use to write the rules. It is a slow loop, but without the harmonized data this project wants, every country just invents its own safety standards.
High-burnup fuels could really change the economics by reducing the frequency of refueling outages. If they can actually extend the cycle, it makes nuclear a much more stable baseload partner for renewables.
Interesting to see the focus on AI for simulation. Physical testing in nuclear is incredibly expensive and slow. If AI can cut the trial-and-error phase for new fuel cladding, the cost of deployment might actually drop.
