Hyundai plans to build a $6 billion steel mill in Louisiana that would use direct reduced iron (DRI) technology and electric arc furnaces instead of traditional coal-fired blast furnaces. This approach can cut greenhouse gas emissions substantially. The facility will initially run on natural gas, which emits less CO2 than coal, and can also use recycled steel in its electric arc furnaces to further lower carbon intensity. The mill is designed to eventually switch to green hydrogen once that fuel becomes commercially available. That would bring the plant close to near-zero-carbon steel production. The output is intended for Hyundai's U.S. auto plants, helping the company reduce embodied carbon in its vehicles. The project shows both the potential and the limits of current low-carbon steel technology: real cuts now, but full decarbonization still depends on hydrogen scale-up and clean electricity.
