Hyundai Motor Group has completed HTWO Energy Cheongju, a hydrogen production and refueling complex in Cheongju, South Korea. The facility uses biogas extracted from local sewage sludge to produce hydrogen, which is then supplied to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and buses in the region. It currently produces about 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day, enough to fuel roughly 100 Nexo cars or 30 hydrogen buses. The company plans to scale daily output to 2 tons by 2030 as Cheongju expands its organic waste treatment capacity. This is the first resource-circulating hydrogen complex directly operated by Hyundai Motor Group in South Korea. The facility includes a biogas purification unit, a hydrogen extraction system, and a carbon dioxide capture unit that turns waste CO2 into liquefied carbon dioxide. Hyundai says the model reduces the need to transport hydrogen from outside the region and supports local energy self-reliance. The company is also pursuing similar waste-to-hydrogen projects in Chungju, Paju, Indonesia, and Hong Kong.
