Hyundai Engineering & Construction is taking part in a South Korean national project to build CO2 liquefaction and bunkering hub technology. The project, led by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, aims to develop integrated infrastructure that purifies captured carbon dioxide, liquefies it, and prepares it for storage or transport. Hyundai E&C will handle the liquefaction process design and the engineering that ties together pretreatment, liquefaction, and loading systems. The goal is to create a blueprint for CCS hubs that can be used at industrial complexes and ports in South Korea and abroad. The consortium includes Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Steel, HD Korea Shipbuilding, GS Caltex, and several research institutes and universities. They plan to demonstrate the full chain from capture to storage and utilization to prove commercial viability. Hyundai E&C is already working on FEED for the Donghae gas field CCS project and exploring CCS opportunities in Southeast Asia. This project moves beyond individual capture projects toward shared infrastructure that multiple emitters can use, which could lower costs and speed up deployment if the engineering holds up.

Good to see a real CCS infrastructure project moving forward in South Korea. The hub model with multiple emission sources makes more sense than each plant doing its own thing. Hyundai E&C has the engineering chops for this.

Agreed. The hub approach could cut per-ton costs if they get the logistics right. But I want to see the actual capture numbers and what purity they are targeting. High purity is expensive.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment is leading this, so there is policy backing. But the article does not say how the captured CO2 will be used or stored long term. If it is just for EOR or storage in depleted gas fields, the economics are different than if it is for utilization.

The Donghae gas field CCS demo is a real project with FEED underway. That gives this some credibility. But the hub concept adds complexity. Multiple emitters means different gas compositions and flow rates. The pretreatment step will be critical.
