Hyosung Scales Bio-BDO Production Using Renewable Sugarcane Feedstock

Hyosung is expanding its production of bio-based 1,4-Butanediol (Bio-BDO) at a new facility in Vietnam. By using fermentation technology to convert sugarcane into a chemically identical alternative to fossil-derived BDO, the company aims to reduce carbon emissions in the production of spandex, plastics, and coatings. The shift toward renewable feedstocks comes as the industry faces regulatory pressure and anti-dumping duties on coal-based BDO imports from China. Hyosung's approach utilizes certified sustainable sugarcane from Brazil to ensure traceability and a significant reduction in carbon avoidance compared to traditional petrochemical methods.
