The HyNet carbon capture project is moving into a new phase with construction of an Above Ground Installation (AGI) in Northop Hall, Flintshire. This AGI will connect the main onshore pipeline from Elton, Cheshire to the Point of Ayr gas terminal with a spur pipeline from the Heidelberg Materials cement works in Padeswood. The cement plant is the UK's first to pursue full-scale carbon capture and storage, designed to capture up to 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually using Mitsubishi Heavy Industries technology. Preparatory works at the Northop Hall site run from summer 2026 to spring 2027. Activities include ground levelling, foundation excavation, and pipework installation starting January 2027. The captured carbon will be transported offshore for storage in depleted gas fields beneath Liverpool Bay. Local residents can expect construction traffic, temporary traffic lights on the B5125, site cabins, and lighting directed away from homes.
