The European Space Agency and CNES are developing the Hyguane project in French Guiana to replace carbon intensive methanol steam reforming with low carbon hydrogen. The initiative includes a 4.5 MWp solar plant and water electrolysis to fuel Ariane 6 rockets and local heavy vehicles. This ecosystem aims to provide 15 percent of the annual hydrogen needs for Ariane 6 by the second half of 2027. The project also incorporates hydrogen fuel cells for critical infrastructure backup and a dedicated refueling station to reduce the spaceport's reliance on external fuel supplies.

4.5 MWp is a start, but I wonder about the actual capacity factor in French Guiana. Solar is intermittent, so they will need significant storage or a very efficient electrolyzer ramp rate to keep the hydrogen flow steady for rocket prep.

The move away from methanol steam reforming is the real win here. It is less about the scale and more about removing the carbon footprint of the feedstock. If they can prove this works for spaceports, it sets a precedent for other high precision industrial sites.

ESA is basically trying to build a closed loop for fuel in Guiana. Replacing imported methanol with local solar hydrogen makes a lot of sense for sovereignty, not just for the climate.

Interested in the hydrogen conditioning center. Compressing and transporting hydrogen is where most of the energy losses happen. I want to see the actual efficiency numbers once the plant is commissioned in 2027.
