Good summary. The China data is the real story here. 95% of fuel cell trucks are in China yet they are still pivoting to battery swapping for heavy freight. That says a lot about where the economics are heading.

The battery swap angle is interesting but I wonder about the grid impact. 900 swapping stations each pulling megawatts during peak hours. That needs serious transmission upgrades. Hydrogen at least stores energy for later use.

True but the article points out hydrogen is mostly made from methane in Canada. So the carbon benefit depends on how you produce it. Battery trucks running on a cleaner grid are more straightforward from a policy perspective.

The conflict of interest angle from the U of C researcher is worth noting. Oil companies produce most hydrogen from methane and also compete with diesel. That structural barrier might matter more than the tech itself for hydrogen adoption in Canada.

China has 1 million electric trucks and 35k hydrogen trucks. The market is voting with orders. Battery costs keep dropping while hydrogen fuel remains expensive. Hard to see hydrogen catching up unless something changes on production cost.
