Hydrogen injection in diesel engines: why cleaner exhaust does not mean lower carbon emissions

This can reduce visible smoke, but the energy required to produce the hydrogen often cancels out any fuel savings. Independent tests show fuel savings below 1% to 5%, far short of the 15-25% claims made by some promoters. The parasitic load from the alternator and electrolyzer means the engine must burn more diesel to produce the hydrogen, making net carbon reductions unlikely. Modern diesel engines are certified as integrated emissions systems. Adding a hydrogen injection device changes intake gases, alternator load, and aftertreatment operation. Claims that it eliminates the need for diesel particulate filters or diesel exhaust fluid are regulatory assertions that require specific evidence. Historical CARB approvals for older engines do not apply to modern fleets. For real carbon savings, externally supplied hydrogen dual-fuel systems are a different category, but they still face production, storage, and infrastructure challenges.
