Hydrogen FCEV Cost Parity with EVs Expected by 2046 Under Strong Carbon Pricing, Study Finds
fuelcellsworks.comA new analysis from the H2Zero Research Unit models the total cost of ownership and well-to-wheel emissions for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles compared to diesel, petrol, and battery EVs from 2026 to 2060. The study finds that hydrogen FCEVs currently cost about 275,000 euros, far more than EVs at 75,000 to 90,000 euros, but the gap narrows under strong decarbonization and carbon pricing. Hydrogen FCEVs become cheaper than internal combustion engine vehicles around 2037 and reach cost parity with EVs by roughly 2046. The research highlights that green hydrogen FCEVs already achieve four times lower well-to-wheel emissions than diesel today, but operate at 30 to 40 percent efficiency versus 70 to 90 percent for EVs. Key factors for competitiveness include hydrogen prices dropping to 2 to 4 euros per kilogram, strategic fleet deployment, hub-based refueling infrastructure, and sustained carbon pricing. The study recommends aligning subsidies with full well-to-wheel emissions rather than tailpipe-only metrics.
