The tension between ETS free allowances and CBAM is the real story here. If the EU keeps giving out free passes to legacy producers, the price signal for green ammonia never actually hits the market. You cannot have both protectionism and a rapid transition.

Policy is one thing, but where is the electrons coming from? Producing 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen requires a massive jump in wind and solar capacity. Does the EU have the grid interconnection ready to support these industrial clusters, or are we just dreaming?

Green ammonia sounds great on paper, but the capex for new plants is huge. Without a guaranteed off-take agreement or a massive price floor, most industrial operators will just stick with natural gas and pay the carbon tax. The payback period is currently too long for private equity.
