Hydrogen and carbon capture plans for Sherburn waste incinerator face scrutiny over public consultation
yorkshirepost.co.ukPlans to add carbon capture and hydrogen production to a waste incinerator at Kingspan Insulation in Sherburn in Elmet are being questioned because the changes would go through as a variation of existing planning permission rather than a fresh application. The site is allowed to process up to 240,000 tonnes of waste a year. The developer wants to install carbon capture equipment that can take around 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and use hydrogen from an on-site electrolyser to power logistics vehicles. North Yorkshire Green Party and Sherburn in Elmet Town Council argue the project is no longer the incinerator approved in 2017 and that residents have not had enough chance to scrutinise it. The developer says the additions would improve environmental performance, create no extra traffic or emissions, and would not need a new environmental impact assessment. The application, reference 26/04654/DVCMAJ, is on the council's planning portal.
