Hydro Ottawa's Piperville substation cuts embodied carbon by 12.3%, sets new standard for grid growth
theglobeandmail.comHydro Ottawa has energized its first lower-carbon substation, the Piperville Municipal Transformer Station in southeast Ottawa. The 90-megawatt facility serves the region's growth while cutting embodied carbon emissions by 12.3 percent compared to the utility's baseline reference, the Cambrian station. By using lower-carbon concrete, a more compact layout, and optimized engineering, the project avoided 618 tonnes of CO2e. This includes a 508-tonne reduction from the building design and a 202-tonne reduction from sustainable materials, offsetting a 92-tonne increase from heavier power equipment. The station also improves grid redundancy for severe weather events and supports new residential, commercial, and transit electrification loads. It is designed to integrate rooftop solar and battery storage in the future. Hydro Ottawa plans to apply this lower-carbon design standard to all new major substations, with projects at Hydro Road and Mer-Bleue slated for 2027 and others following through 2030. This makes Piperville a practical example of how utilities can build needed infrastructure while reducing its climate footprint.
