Hydro Ottawa cuts embodied carbon 12.3% at Piperville substation with leaner concrete design
sustainablebiz.caHydro Ottawa has energized the Piperville municipal transformer station in southeast Ottawa, its first substation designed with lower embodied carbon. By using a shallower basement, less concrete, and a lower-carbon concrete mix, the utility cut embodied carbon by 12.3% compared with its Cambrian substation, a net reduction of 618 tonnes of CO2. The station adds 90 MW of capacity and supports rooftop solar and battery integration. Hydro Ottawa says it will apply the same design principles to four more substations planned between 2026 and 2030. The company is also looking at reducing SF6, a potent greenhouse gas used in high-voltage equipment. The project is a practical example of how infrastructure owners can cut material-related emissions without changing how a substation operates.
