Hydro and CHANEL partner to cut aluminium packaging carbon footprint to 3.0 kg CO2 per kg by 2030
alcircle.comNorwegian aluminium producer Hydro has signed a strategic partnership with CHANEL Fragrance and Beauty to develop low-carbon aluminium for fragrance, makeup, and skincare packaging. The goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of aluminium packaging to approximately 3.0 kilograms of CO2 equivalent per kilogram of aluminium by 2030, down from the current certified 4.0 kg for Hydro's REDUXA primary aluminium produced with renewable energy in Norway. That current footprint is already less than one third of the global average for primary aluminium. The partnership will focus on using Hydro REDUXA sheet ingot, testing batch-specific production, enhancing traceability, and increasing the use of recycled aluminium. Both companies see the luxury beauty sector as a driver for raising standards across the aluminium value chain. The agreement runs from 2026 to 2030 and is part of broader efforts to decarbonize materials used in consumer goods.
