Hycamite has joined the FutSteel research project, a 17 million euro initiative led by the University of Oulu and SSAB to decarbonize steel production. The project focuses on integrating electric arc furnace technology with hydrogen and carbon materials produced without emissions. Hycamite's methane splitting technology produces hydrogen and carbon products using roughly one-eighth the energy of electrolysis, with much of that energy sourced from excess heat from the steel plant itself. The steel industry accounts for about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This project aims to replace coal-based blast furnaces with electric arc furnaces powered by fossil-free energy, while still using carbon for slag foaming and alloying. The three year project starting June 2026 includes partners like VTT, Coolbrook, Ovako, and Carbo Culture. Hycamite's approach could lower production costs and speed up hydrogen delivery for steelmakers.

Steel is 7% of global emissions so any real pilot is worth tracking. The FutSteel project has a solid list of industrial partners. Three years is short for a full value chain demo though.

The energy claim is the part I want to see verified. One eighth the energy of electrolysis sounds good but methane pyrolysis still needs methane feedstock and the carbon output has to go somewhere. Is the carbon product actually usable at scale for slag foaming or is it mostly a storage problem dressed up as a product?

The project structure is interesting. 17 million euro with university lead and multiple industrial partners including a mine and a carbon materials company. If the carbon products are actually sold into steelmaking rather than stored, that changes the economics and the carbon accounting. Worth watching how they report the lifecycle.

Methane pyrolysis for steel is a niche but the energy efficiency angle is real if the heat recovery works. Still, methane is a fossil fuel feedstock. The carbon ends up in the steel or as a solid product, not CO2, but the methane source matters for the overall footprint.
