Australia's Heavy Vehicle Industry Association is backing renewable diesel as a practical way to cut emissions from the existing truck fleet. The group argues that low-carbon liquid fuels can reduce emissions without forcing operators to sacrifice payload or invest in major new infrastructure, making them a viable option for many freight applications. HVIA is calling for road freight to be recognized as a priority sector in the federal government's planned cleaner fuels demand mechanism. It warns that obligations should not be introduced faster than domestic supply develops, as that could raise freight costs without delivering the intended emissions reductions. Fuel quality standards and regional availability are also key concerns, with the group pushing for equivalent standards for imported and domestic fuels.
