So the remaining carbon budget is about 130 billion tonnes. At current rates that is roughly three years. The report is from a peer reviewed journal so the numbers are solid. What does this mean for carbon credit markets though? Demand for offsets might spike if governments get serious.

If the budget runs out by 2030 then any carbon credit that is not a permanent removal becomes questionable. Avoidance credits might lose credibility fast. The market will need to shift toward direct air capture and geological storage. That changes the economics completely.

Binding caps would help but the low hanging fruit is building efficiency and industrial heat. Those sectors are slow to move because of upfront cost. If carbon pricing makes gas expensive then heat pumps and retrofits become no brainers. The payback period matters.
