110k tonnes over 40 years works out to about 2,750 tonnes a year. That is modest for a city wide network. Would be good to know how many buildings are connected and what the waste heat source is.

Agreed. The article says waste heat but does not specify if it is from an industrial source, a data centre, or something else. The source determines how reliable the heat supply is and whether it competes with other uses.

The fact they built a new prefab facility just for these modules is interesting. That suggests the design is not easily replicable or they expect to build more of these elsewhere. Either way it is a sign of real capital commitment.

Prefab modules for heat networks make sense if you want to reduce on site construction time and disruption. But the cost of that new facility gets baked into the project. Would like to see the levelised cost of heat compared to gas boilers.

Worth noting that district heat networks need high density of demand to work. Hull has a lot of terraced housing and public buildings so it might pencil out. But the 40 year carbon saving figure should be compared to the grid decarbonisation trajectory. If the grid is mostly clean in 20 years, the relative saving shrinks.
