Wastewater treatment plants are significant sources of methane and nitrous oxide. New research suggests a multifaceted approach to reach carbon neutrality by optimizing aeration, implementing low-carbon processes like anammox, and reducing fugitive greenhouse gas emissions. Beyond efficiency, the study highlights the potential of recovering heat from treated effluent and converting sewage sludge into biogas. Shifting these plants into resource recovery facilities allows for the extraction of phosphorus, nitrogen, and biopolymers, creating economic value while lowering the carbon footprint.
