How sea breezes and mountain winds push black carbon soot to high altitudes in Thiruvananthapuram
researchmatters.inA study by scientists from VSSC-ISRO and Cochin University of Science and Technology tracked black carbon movement from coastal Thiruvananthapuram to the Ponmudi hill station in the Western Ghats. Using four years of data from 2015 to 2019, they found that daily sea breezes and mountain thermal winds combine to lift urban soot particles nearly a kilometer higher into pristine mountain air. Black carbon from incomplete fossil fuel and biomass burning is a potent climate warmer because it absorbs sunlight and alters cloud formation. The research used aethalometers at two sites and the WRF-Chem computer model to simulate aerosol pathways. At the coastal site, black carbon spiked in mornings and nights due to trapped traffic emissions. At the mountain site, pollution peaked in afternoons as sea breezes pushed coastal air inland while valley breezes from heated slopes lofted the particles upward. The findings help predict regional climate impacts and support targeted air quality management for both population health and high altitude ecosystems.
