A new analysis published in Environmental Sustainability examines whether nanomaterials like graphene, carbon nanotubes, and solid-state electrolytes can help Italy close its renewable energy storage gap. The study compares Italy's research strengths, including the Italian Institute of Technology, with policy approaches in Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan. It finds that despite strong lab capabilities, Italy lacks targeted funding, regulatory sandboxes, and industry coordination needed to move advanced batteries from prototype to grid-scale deployment. The review highlights that graphene-based systems can reach 650 Wh/kg and fast charge under 15 minutes, while lithium-sulfur and solid-state designs offer longer cycle life and safer operation. But production costs remain high, with graphene at roughly $100/kg versus $10/kg for conventional materials. The authors recommend dedicated R&D funding, streamlined approvals, and innovation hubs to bridge the gap between research and commercial storage projects.
