How Grid Decarbonization Reduces the Carbon Footprint of Snowmaking

A new study from the University of Innsbruck shows that the environmental impact of snowmaking depends primarily on the local energy mix. While older data suggested high emissions, modern resorts using renewable energy grids, such as hydropower in Austria, have significantly lower carbon footprints per visitor. Beyond electricity, the industry is shifting toward reclaimed water systems to protect local watersheds. This transition toward green energy and closed-loop water usage suggests that snowmaking can be decarbonized if the power source is clean.
