Through nutrient recycling, these marine mammals can increase sediment carbon stocks by up to 263 percent compared to areas without them. Researchers argue that integrating megafauna into blue carbon strategies is essential for accurate climate accounting. Protecting these habitats from coastal development and fishing nets could secure thousands of additional metric tonnes of captured carbon annually.
