New climate data indicates that rising temperatures and prolonged droughts are weakening the ability of cotton-growing regions to act as carbon sinks. As soils lose their capacity to hold water, their ability to store carbon decreases, creating a negative feedback loop for the environment. To counter these effects, agricultural standards are pushing for accelerated adoption of regenerative practices. Cover crops, reduced tillage, and compost additions are being prioritized to improve soil structure and enhance water retention to stabilize carbon levels.
