How AI, EVs, and Power Grids Are Rewriting Silver Demand
carboncredits.comSilver demand is no longer just a solar story. Industrial use reached 657.4 million ounces in 2025, more than half of global demand, but the mix is changing. Solar cell makers are using less silver through thrifting and substitution, while AI data centers, EVs, and power grid upgrades are adding new demand for electrical contacts, switches, and power electronics. EVs use 67% to 79% more silver than internal combustion vehicles, and global data center power capacity jumped from under 1 GW in 2000 to nearly 50 GW in 2025. That means more transformers, substations, and electrical gear, all of which rely on silver's conductivity. The Silver Institute expects AI infrastructure, automotive, and grid investment to keep growing even as total industrial demand dips again in 2026. Supply is the bottleneck. Mine output rose 3% in 2025, but the market still ran a deficit, with another 46.3 million ounce shortfall projected for 2026. Existing operations like Sierra Madre's La Guitarra expansion and Del Toro restart show how producers are trying to bring capacity online faster than new mines can.
