Hourly Clean Power and Green Hydrogen Can Decarbonize India's Steel at Just 3% Cost Increase: TransitionZero Report
carboncopy.infoA new report from TransitionZero shows that Indian steelmakers can cut emissions significantly by combining hourly-matched carbon-free electricity with green hydrogen blending. The approach adds only about $13 per tonne of crude steel, a 3% premium on typical production costs. This is a concrete path to reduce the steel sector's carbon intensity, which is currently 35% higher than the global average. The report focuses on secondary steelmaking using electric arc and induction furnaces, plus gas-based direct reduced iron plants. By matching furnace power demand to clean generation hour by hour and blending 20% green hydrogen, steelmakers can eliminate a large share of direct and indirect emissions. Co-optimizing power procurement for steel plants and hydrogen electrolysers cuts renewable curtailment by up to 90%. India's steel production is expected to hit 300 million tonnes by 2030, and the sector accounts for 12% of national greenhouse gas emissions. This report offers a realistic, near-term pathway for decarbonization without waiting for legacy blast furnace replacements. It also reduces reliance on imported natural gas, which is a practical benefit for supply chain resilience.
