Marine biodiesel briefly became the cheapest bunker option in Rotterdam after the Strait of Hormuz closure sent fossil fuel prices up. A white paper from General Index and LSEG found that B30, a blend of 30% used cooking oil methyl ester and 70% VLSFO, was $74.61 per tonne cheaper than conventional VLSFO in April once EU ETS allowances and potential FuelEU Maritime penalties were included. In the three months before that, B30 was $11 to $27 per tonne more expensive on the same basis. B100 UCOME also traded below marine gasoil for eight weeks between March and May when carbon costs were included. The report warns this is not a permanent shift. Biofuels are still generally more expensive before carbon pricing, and the Rotterdam comparison includes potential regulatory penalties, not necessarily what every vessel pays. The aviation sector remains further away from a tipping point, with SAF needing carbon prices around $445 per tonne CO2e to close the gap with conventional jet fuel.
