Hong Kong wraps up first cross-border green electricity certificate trades with mainland China
scmp.comHong Kong Exchanges and Clearing has completed its first pilot trades for green products with mainland China. Through its Core Climate platform, 15 companies bought about 100,000 Green Electricity Certificates from the Guangzhou Power Exchange. Each GEC represents one megawatt-hour of renewable electricity, so the pilot is a test of cross-border settlement for energy attribute certificates. The pilot matters because it extends Core Climate beyond carbon credits into renewable electricity tracking. If the process scales, Hong Kong could become a practical channel for companies to meet renewable energy targets using mainland generation. The next thing to watch is how certificate pricing, verification, and double counting rules hold up once trading volume grows.
