Hong Kong to review electricity market after 2033, targets 60-70% zero-carbon power by 2035
thestandard.com.hkHong Kong plans a full review of its electricity market before the current Scheme of Control Agreements with CLP Power and HK Electric expire in 2033. The government wants the next regime to support rising demand from data centers and advanced computing while keeping tariffs competitive. Zero-carbon sources are now about 25% of the mix, with a target of 30% by 2030 and 60-70% by 2035, leaning on nuclear and offshore wind imported from mainland China. To make that work, Hong Kong is preparing to reclaim land in Tseung Kwan O for a new power receiving facility and a cross-border transmission cable, with funding requests already sent to LegCo. The city is also negotiating low-carbon power contracts with regional suppliers. On waste, the government dropped the mandatory charging scheme after public pushback and is expanding the Green@Community recycling network with smart bins and automated machines.
