Hong Kong's acting chief executive Paul Lam announced that innovation will be the foundation of the city's first five-year plan, with a strong focus on green technology, new energy, and sustainable aviation fuels. Speaking at the Green Way 2026 event, Lam highlighted that Hong Kong has already cut greenhouse gas emissions by 27 percent from their 2014 peak and aims for carbon neutrality by 2050. Key initiatives include expanding green fuel bunkering for shipping and aviation to boost low-carbon logistics competitiveness. Hong Kong has led Asia in arranging international green and sustainable bond issuances for eight consecutive years, capturing about 40 percent of the regional market. The EU Office to Hong Kong and Macao confirmed European companies are contributing expertise in waste management, water desalination, and aircraft recycling. The plan also invites collaboration with EU stakeholders on sustainable urban planning and smart infrastructure for the Northern Metropolis development. This positions Hong Kong as a regional hub for climate finance and low-carbon technology deployment.
