HK Electric has decommissioned its 800-kilowatt wind turbine on Lamma Island. The turbine reached the end of its 20 year service life, and a lack of available spare parts made continued operation unsafe. Over two decades, the facility reduced carbon emissions by approximately 13 million kilograms. Despite a goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, Hong Kong remains heavily dependent on coal and natural gas. Renewable energy currently makes up only about one percent of the region's power mix, with proposed offshore wind projects stalled due to high costs.
